Fresh Rift in Jatiya Party: Quader vs Anisul Over Leadership and Symbol

A fresh split has emerged within the Jatiya Party, with one faction led by Chairman GM Quader and the other by Anisul Islam Mahmud, who heads a newly formed committee. Both groups are now claiming control over the party and its electoral symbol, the “Plough,” and have approached the Election Commission for recognition.

On August 9, Anisul’s supporters organized the party’s 10th council in Gulshan. In that session, Anisul was declared chairman, with Mujibul Haque as executive chairman, Kazi Firoz Rashid as senior co-chairman, and Ruhul Amin Hawlader as secretary general. This faction claims that they have amended the party constitution by abolishing the controversial clause granting the chairman absolute power. They argue that major decisions must now receive approval from the presidium, and only their committee has the legal right to use the “Plough” symbol.

In contrast, GM Quader’s camp has dismissed the council as illegal, insisting that only the chairman has the authority to call a council. They also argue that expelled leaders cannot legally organize such a session. According to them, no Election Commission representative was present during the council, raising further questions about its legitimacy.

Previously, Quader had expelled Anisul and several other senior leaders from the party. Following the split, both sides moved to court, which initially imposed a temporary injunction on party activities. However, after the case was withdrawn, the restriction on Quader was lifted.

At present, both factions are seeking recognition from the Election Commission, leaving the party’s leadership and control over its historic symbol in limbo.

Bleeding and unconscious, Nur rushed to hospital after violent clashes

Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gana Adhikar Parishad and former DUCSU VP, was critically injured in clashes with police in front of the Jatiya Party headquarters in Dhaka on Friday night. The incident occurred around 8:15 pm when Gana Adhikar leaders gathered near the JP office, sparking chases and counter-chases with party activists.

Witnesses said the army intervened to disperse JP activists and gave Gana Adhikar leaders 10 minutes to leave. As they failed to comply, law enforcers carried out baton charges, leaving many injured including Nur. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a bloodied state and admitted to the ICU. Doctors later confirmed brain hemorrhage.

Rashed Khan, the party’s general secretary, along with several others, was also injured and hospitalized. He accused Awami League and Jatiya Party “goons” of attacking their rally.

On Saturday morning, a post on Nur’s verified Facebook page stated that he had regained partial consciousness but remained in intensive care. The chief adviser’s press secretary condemned the attack as “highly despicable,” while law adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul visited Nur at the hospital.

People Fed Up with Behavior of 24th Movement Activists- Kader Siddique

Abdul Kader Siddique, Bir Uttam and founder of Krishak Sramik Janata League, has said that the people of Bangladesh are fed up with the current behavior of the 24th movement activists. He made the remarks at a press conference at his residence in Tangail on Thursday (28 August).

While expressing his support for the movement, Siddique said he considered it close to the country’s independence struggle. However, he noted that the activists’ recent actions are causing public suffering. He added that although he expected their victory to last long, it is now fading quickly, labeling the current regime’s allies as “greater autocrats” than before.

Siddique also said that Bangladesh would not have been independent without Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and that Tangail’s political foundation would not have existed without Latif Siddique. He stressed the need for fair elections and stronger security in the country.

Commenting on the Latif Siddique incident, Siddique claimed that during an event organized by the ’71 Mancha, a mob handed Latif Siddique over to law enforcement. He urged that Latif Siddique be released with dignity, adding that any legal charges against him should be settled in court.

Journalists from local print and electronic media attended the press conference.
