State’s appeal dismissed: Tarique Rahman, Lutfozzaman Babar cleared

Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has upheld a High Court verdict acquitting all accused in the 2004 August 21 grenade attack case, including former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, who had been sentenced to death, and BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, who had been handed a life sentence.
On Thursday (September 4), a six-member appellate bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed dismissed the state’s appeal against the High Court ruling. The court also revised and annulled certain portions of the earlier verdict.
The judgment followed five days of hearings that concluded on August 30, after which the court set September 4 for the ruling.
