State’s appeal dismissed: Tarique Rahman, Lutfozzaman Babar cleared

Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has upheld a High Court verdict acquitting all accused in the 2004 August 21 grenade attack case, including former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, who had been sentenced to death, and BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, who had been handed a life sentence.

On Thursday (September 4), a six-member appellate bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed dismissed the state’s appeal against the High Court ruling. The court also revised and annulled certain portions of the earlier verdict.

The judgment followed five days of hearings that concluded on August 30, after which the court set September 4 for the ruling.

Corruption and information suppression allegations against Rajshahi District Livestock Officer

HEADLINE: Corruption and information suppression allegations against Rajshahi District Livestock Officer

Rajshahi District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Atowar Rahman is facing serious allegations of violating the Right to Information Act, misappropriating project funds, and engaging in widespread bribery.

Why it matters: Despite the legal obligation to ensure transparency in government offices, Dr. Atowar Rahman has strategically rejected applications to cover up his irregularities and corruption. This incident has raised significant questions regarding the transparency and accountability of public services.

The big picture: Allegations have surfaced regarding fraud in the distribution of equipment and feed allocated to farmers under the LDDP project, as well as the misappropriation of government funds through the creation of fake beneficiary lists. Furthermore, he is accused of amassing illegal wealth through license issuance, transfer trading, and the creation of fraudulent bills for procurement.

Between the lines: When information was requested under the Right to Information Act, District Officer Dr. Atowar Rahman failed to provide it and instead harassed the applicant. He claimed that the information was not available in his office, which legal experts describe as a clear violation of the Right to Information Act and an attempt to conceal evidence of corruption.

What’s next: Local farmers and civil society have demanded strict intervention from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock against this corruption. Legal action against Dr. Atowar Rahman through an impartial investigation is now a demand of the time.

The bottom line: Dr. Atowar Rahman not only refused to provide information but also behaved arrogantly and issued threats to investigative journalists. While the divisional director attempted to evade responsibility by claiming the matter is controlled from Dhaka, an investigation into the widespread irregularities at the field level has become inevitable.

By the numbers: Although there were allocations of millions of taka under the LDDP project in Rajshahi district, investigations have revealed that actual farmers have been deprived of government incentives.

Mysterious fire breaks out in parked bus on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar

Why it matters: This early morning fire on a passenger bus parked along the busy Dhaka-Aricha highway has spread panic among the public and raised fresh questions regarding the security of public transport.

The big picture: On Sunday morning, a bus named ‘Savar Paribahan’ parked along the Dhaka-Aricha highway in the Anandapur area of Savar suddenly caught fire. Upon receiving the news, two units of the Savar Fire Service quickly reached the spot and brought the fire under control, but by then, most of the bus seats and interior parts had been reduced to ashes.

Between the lines: Based on the initial investigation by the Fire Service, it is suspected to be an act of sabotage rather than an accident. Savar Fire Service Inspector Meherul Islam stated that it appears, at first glance, that miscreants deliberately set the bus on fire.

Impact of the event: Fortunately, there were no casualties as the bus was empty at the time of the fire. However, there have been demands to increase local administration surveillance to ensure the security of vehicles parked along the highway.

What’s next: Police and Fire Service authorities have begun an investigation, including collecting CCTV footage, to identify the actual culprits. The bus owners are in the process of taking legal action at the relevant police station.

The bottom line: Law enforcement agencies believe this act of sabotage was carried out with the intention of disrupting public safety. The local administration has assured that strict action will be taken against the perpetrators following the investigation.

By the numbers: Two units of the Savar Fire Service were able to fully extinguish the fire after about half an hour of effort. With most of the bus destroyed, the owners are expected to face significant financial losses.
