Tk 2 Trillion Counterfeit Notes Allegedly Smuggled into Bangladesh

An investigative report from Qatar and viral social media claims suggest a clandestine network is attempting to flood Bangladesh with counterfeit notes worth nearly Tk 2 trillion, allegedly in collaboration with a neighboring country’s intelligence agency and organized groups.

According to the report, raw materials for fake currency and equipment similar to those used in official mints are being produced in the same region and smuggled into Bangladesh. The paper reportedly resembles the texture of official Bangladeshi notes, raising suspicions about the scale of the operation.

The investigation further alleges that former mint designers, skilled technicians, and politically connected individuals are involved in printing counterfeit notes through secret networks. These fake bills are allegedly being circulated inside the country via social media channels and informal trade.

The issue drew widespread attention after Qatari-based journalist Julkar Nain Sayar Khan shared a Facebook post that quickly went viral. Following this, Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies reportedly began taking action.

Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, told Jugantor that such a massive claim—if proven true—would be extremely alarming. “The central bank has limitations in its operations. Law enforcement agencies must move quickly, while the public should remain cautious to avoid risks,” he said. Khan added that currently no old notes are being reissued in the market—only newly printed currency is being circulated.
