Bangladesh braces for widespread rainfall over next five days
Rainfall is likely across all eight divisions of Bangladesh over the coming days as the monsoon remains active over the country and moderate over the North Bay, according to the Meteorological Department.
In its 120-hour forecast issued on Friday (29 August), the Met office said many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, and some parts of Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds. Some places may see moderate to heavy rainfall, while both day and night temperatures are expected to drop slightly.
On Saturday (30 August), widespread rain is likely in Rangpur and scattered showers in other divisions, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of Rangpur. Daytime temperatures may rise slightly, but nighttime temperatures will remain nearly unchanged.
On Sunday (31 August), many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet may see rain, while scattered showers are expected in other regions. Some areas could experience moderately heavy rainfall, with temperatures likely to rise slightly.
The extended five-day outlook suggests rainfall activity may persist across the country.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast across all divisions of Bangladesh, according to the Meteorological Department on Monday (15 September). Officials warned that monsoon activity over the country and the Bay of Bengal remains strong, raising the likelihood of widespread downpours.
Meteorologist Khandaker Hafizur Rahman said the low pressure over Telangana has weakened, but the monsoon trough is still active over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet.
Until Tuesday (16 September) morning, most areas are expected to see light to moderate rain or thundershowers, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in some regions. Day and night temperatures may slightly decrease.
From Wednesday (17 September), rainfall will be more concentrated in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet, while other divisions may see scattered showers. Temperatures may rise slightly during this period.
The forecast for Thursday (18 September) and Friday (19 September) indicates continued rainfall across the country, with heavier downpours in the northern and northeastern regions. Temperatures are expected to remain steady or increase slightly.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast a slight drop in temperature for Dhaka and surrounding areas. In its six-hour weather bulletin from 7 AM Sunday, the agency said the sky may remain partly cloudy to temporarily cloudy with chances of light rain.
Winds are expected to blow from the south and southeast at a speed of 8 to 12 kilometers per hour.
At 6 AM, Dhaka recorded a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius with humidity at 83 percent, according to the Met Office.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has advised all seaports to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3 as squally weather is likely over the North Bay and coastal areas.
In a warning issued on Wednesday (3 September), meteorologist Dr. Md Omar Faruq said a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low. It is likely to move west-northwestward, causing significant pressure variations and squally winds over the region.
Authorities instructed Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra ports to keep signal No. 3 hoisted. Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
