BNP-backed panel boycotts JACSU polls, alleging collusion with Jamaat

The BNP-backed student panel has withdrawn from the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) election, alleging large-scale irregularities and collusion between the university administration and Jamaat-e-Islami to favor the Shibir-backed panel.
At a press conference around 3:45 pm on Thursday (11 September), GS candidate Tanzila Hossain Boishakhi announced the boycott. Earlier at noon, the panel raised allegations that ballot papers and OMR machines were supplied by a little-known company linked to Jamaat, bypassing the usual procurement process.
VP candidate Sheikh Sadi Hasan claimed that the Election Commission opted for manual vote counting after irregularities surfaced but continued using the same company’s ballot papers, raising questions of fairness.
This year, a total of 11,897 students are eligible to cast their votes in the JACSU polls. A total of 177 candidates are contesting 25 positions across eight panels, including leftist, Shibir, BNP-backed, and independent groups.

Each student will cast a total of 40 votes—26 for the central union and 14 for their respective hall unions. Voting is taking place at 15 polling centers across five faculty buildings, with a special booth arranged at the CUCSU office for visually impaired students.
A total of 908 candidates are contesting in the election—415 for 26 central positions and 473 for 14 hall councils. The voter list includes 27,518 students, with 16,189 males and 11,329 females.
To ensure a fair and peaceful election, around 1,700 members from police, RAB, BGB, APBn, campus security, BNCC, and Rover Scouts have been deployed. Five executive magistrates and four mobile courts are on duty to maintain order.
Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr. Monir Uddin said that all preparations have been made to hold a peaceful and transparent election, with strict monitoring to prevent the entry of outsiders.
All classes and exams have been suspended for Wednesday and Thursday. The entire voting and counting process will be broadcast live on 14 LED screens across the campus. Additional shuttle train trips and 15 university buses have been arranged to facilitate student movement.
Formed in 1966, CUCSU has been a platform for student leadership and rights advocacy. The return of the long-awaited election after more than three decades has transformed the campus into a vibrant festival of democracy.
