Football Match Row Turns Violent: Two Hospitalised in Begumganj
Two activists of Jamaat-e-Islami’s youth wing were shot and injured in an armed attack allegedly carried out by a Jubo Dal activist in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali. The incident occurred on Sunday night at Betuabagh village under Gopalpur union, police confirmed on Monday morning.
The injured were identified as Sajib Hossain (20) and Tushar (21), both residents of the area and members of Jamaat’s youth wing. They were admitted to Noakhali General Hospital and are currently under treatment.
According to locals and party sources, tension had been brewing since Friday following an altercation during a football match between Jamaat and Jubo Dal activists. Later that evening, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal activists allegedly staged an armed showdown and detonated crude bombs. The conflict resurfaced on Sunday evening after a mediation meeting, when gunshots were fired, leaving the two Jamaat activists injured.
Jamaat leaders accused Jubo Dal activist Habib of opening fire, though his mobile phone was found switched off and his version could not be obtained. District Jubo Dal convener Manjurul Azim Sumon said he was unaware of the incident.
Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Liton Dewan said the clash originated from disputes over watching and participating in the football match. Police are investigating the incident.
A grandfather and his grandson drowned in a pond in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat on Thursday (18 September). The incident occurred in Shibpur village.
The victims were identified as Nur Kader Molla, 9, and his grandfather Shahjahan Molla, 80. Locals said the boy drowned while bathing, and his grandfather also went under while trying to rescue him.
Both were taken to Chitalmari Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead. Police confirmed that preparations for burial at the family graveyard are underway.
The government has taken a series of steps to address pension-related complications for retired civil servants, including a proposal to reduce the waiting period for pension restoration from 15 years to 10 years for those who surrendered their full pension.
The decisions were made at a meeting chaired by Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid, where retired Additional Secretary A K M Saiful Islam Chowdhury highlighted the problems faced by pensioners.
Under the proposals, if a pensioner dies before restoration, their spouse or legal heirs will be entitled to pension benefits. In case of a second marriage, the surviving spouse will also be eligible for family pension.
The meeting also recommended providing medical assistance from the Government Employees Welfare Board to retired officials suffering from serious illnesses. For expatriate employees, ministries will review procedures to simplify paperwork and formalities.
Other measures include increasing festival allowances for full pension surrenderees, restoring allowances upon reinstatement, and reconsidering monthly pension payments for those who had taken lump-sum withdrawals. The government has also instructed authorities to intensify awareness campaigns about the universal pension scheme.
The Cabinet Division has already communicated these decisions to the Finance Division and relevant agencies. An official from the finance ministry said implementation work has begun.
Broadcasting services relying on Bangladesh Satellite-1 (BS-1) may face temporary disruptions between September 29 and October 6 due to a solar interference phenomenon, Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) announced in a press release on Wednesday (September 17).
According to BSCL spokesperson Omar Haider, solar interference is a natural space event that occurs twice a year when the sun, satellite, and Earth align, causing temporary signal interruptions for geostationary satellites.
The advisory noted that broadcasting disruptions may last between 3 and 13 minutes each day during the period, mostly between 9:29 am and 9:42 am. Specific time slots have been identified for each day from September 29 to October 6.
BSCL further stated that it will closely monitor the situation and take necessary steps if required. BS-1 currently provides broadcasting and telecommunication services to various domestic and international clients.
