Gopalganj Observes July Uprising Day with Tributes and Political Rallies

Gopalganj observed the July Uprising Day on Tuesday (August 5) through a series of events including tributes to the martyrs, rallies, and politically charged speeches by opposition parties.
The day began with floral tributes at the grave of Shaheed Moinul and six other victims of the 2024 uprising. District Commissioner Muhammad Kamruzzaman informed that 7 people from Gopalganj were killed and 42 injured during the movement in Dhaka. A tree was planted in memory of each martyr. Later, a discussion and gift distribution event was held with the families of the martyrs at the DC’s conference room.
In the afternoon, BNP leaders and activists took out a “Victory Rally” from the party’s office. During the rally, district BNP convener Sharif Rafiquzzaman claimed, “This day marks the fall of dictator Sheikh Hasina and the return of democracy.”
Simultaneously, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami organized a mass procession. In a subsequent gathering, district Ameer Rezaul Karim declared, “A true patriot never flees. Sheikh Hasina fled the country on this day. She tried to suppress Jamaat, but like a river’s current, we cannot be stopped.”
Both opposition parties used the occasion to highlight their narratives about the uprising and criticize the former regime.

Govt cuts pension restoration waiting period from 15 to 10 years

The government has taken a series of steps to address pension-related complications for retired civil servants, including a proposal to reduce the waiting period for pension restoration from 15 years to 10 years for those who surrendered their full pension.
The decisions were made at a meeting chaired by Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid, where retired Additional Secretary A K M Saiful Islam Chowdhury highlighted the problems faced by pensioners.
Under the proposals, if a pensioner dies before restoration, their spouse or legal heirs will be entitled to pension benefits. In case of a second marriage, the surviving spouse will also be eligible for family pension.
The meeting also recommended providing medical assistance from the Government Employees Welfare Board to retired officials suffering from serious illnesses. For expatriate employees, ministries will review procedures to simplify paperwork and formalities.
Other measures include increasing festival allowances for full pension surrenderees, restoring allowances upon reinstatement, and reconsidering monthly pension payments for those who had taken lump-sum withdrawals. The government has also instructed authorities to intensify awareness campaigns about the universal pension scheme.
The Cabinet Division has already communicated these decisions to the Finance Division and relevant agencies. An official from the finance ministry said implementation work has begun.

Temporary Broadcast Disruptions Expected Between Sept 29 and Oct 6

Broadcasting services relying on Bangladesh Satellite-1 (BS-1) may face temporary disruptions between September 29 and October 6 due to a solar interference phenomenon, Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) announced in a press release on Wednesday (September 17).
According to BSCL spokesperson Omar Haider, solar interference is a natural space event that occurs twice a year when the sun, satellite, and Earth align, causing temporary signal interruptions for geostationary satellites.
The advisory noted that broadcasting disruptions may last between 3 and 13 minutes each day during the period, mostly between 9:29 am and 9:42 am. Specific time slots have been identified for each day from September 29 to October 6.
BSCL further stated that it will closely monitor the situation and take necessary steps if required. BS-1 currently provides broadcasting and telecommunication services to various domestic and international clients.
