Man in Jessore Accused of Abandoning Wife, Eloping with Another Man’s Spouse

A man in Jessore’s Baniargati village has been accused of driving his wife and child out of their home over dowry demands and later eloping with another man’s wife. The accused, Sabuj Hossain, is alleged to have taken the wife of expatriate worker Al Amin into his home.
The victim, Mim, filed a written complaint with Kotwali police on Friday night (8 August). She stated that she married Sabuj three and a half years ago, receiving furniture and gifts at the wedding. Later, Sabuj demanded Tk 300,000 as dowry. When she refused, he subjected her to physical abuse.
On 4 August, Sabuj allegedly renewed his dowry demand. When Mim refused again, he tried to strangle her, reportedly with the help of his mother, Tahmina Begum. Neighbours rescued Mim, after which Sabuj declared he would not live with her without the dowry and drove her and their child out.
According to Al Amin, his wife Irani regularly took money from him but later left with Tk 50,000 to be with Sabuj. Attempts to reach Sabuj by phone were unsuccessful. Kotwali police sub-inspector Kabir Hasan confirmed that an investigation has been launched following the complaint.
