Rainfall is likely across all eight divisions of Bangladesh over the coming days as the monsoon remains active over the country and moderate over the North Bay, according to the Meteorological Department.

In its 120-hour forecast issued on Friday (29 August), the Met office said many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, and some parts of Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds. Some places may see moderate to heavy rainfall, while both day and night temperatures are expected to drop slightly.

On Saturday (30 August), widespread rain is likely in Rangpur and scattered showers in other divisions, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts of Rangpur. Daytime temperatures may rise slightly, but nighttime temperatures will remain nearly unchanged.

On Sunday (31 August), many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet may see rain, while scattered showers are expected in other regions. Some areas could experience moderately heavy rainfall, with temperatures likely to rise slightly.

The extended five-day outlook suggests rainfall activity may persist across the country.

Bangladesh is likely to experience widespread rainfall and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours due to the active monsoon system, according to the Meteorological Department. The forecast, signed by meteorologist Khandaker Hafizur Rahman, was issued on Tuesday (26 August).

The department reported that a low-pressure area has formed near the West Bengal–Odisha coast over the northwest Bay of Bengal. The monsoon trough stretches from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, across Bangladesh’s southern region into Assam. The monsoon is currently active over Bangladesh and moderate over the north Bay.

Under these conditions, many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, along with some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions, are likely to see rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in isolated places. However, no major changes in temperature are expected.

Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) reported that another low-pressure system may form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas within the next 24 hours. Water levels in the Manu and Dhalai rivers of Mymensingh division may rise and remain steady for two days, while the Khwai River is expected to remain stable over the next three days. Coastal rivers in Barishal, Khulna, and Chattogram divisions may experience higher-than-normal tides for the next three days.

Though no significant rainfall was recorded inside Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, heavy showers occurred upstream in India’s Mizoram (Aizawl 76 mm) and Tripura (Kailashahar 74 mm). Looking ahead, from 26 to 29 August, moderate to moderately heavy rainfall is expected in Sylhet, Chattogram, Barishal, and Khulna divisions of Bangladesh, as well as in Meghalaya, Assam, and Tripura states of India.

Rain is likely to continue across Bangladesh today, with heavier showers expected in Chattogram, Sylhet, and Rangpur divisions. The forecast was confirmed on Sunday (24 August) morning by Omar Faruk, a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

According to him, a low-pressure system has formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas, while another low is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal by Monday (25 August). Active monsoon conditions over Bangladesh and strong activity over the Bay of Bengal are causing the rainfall.

The Met Office said that between Sunday evening and Monday evening, light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places in Rangpur, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, and Barishal divisions may also experience rain, with moderate to heavy showers possible in some areas.

In Dhaka and surrounding areas, cloudy skies and light rainfall are expected, accompanied by winds from the south or southeast at speeds of 10–15 km/h. The capital recorded 10 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours.

River ports in Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number 1 due to temporary squalls at 45–60 km/h. Meanwhile, maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been asked to hoist local cautionary signal number 3.
