Three traders fined in Trishal for producing fish feed using tannery waste

Why it matters: The production of adulterated fish feed by mixing toxic tannery waste in Trishal, Mymensingh, has created a major threat to public health, which is a serious offense under the Fish and Animal Feed Act.

The big picture: Based on secret information from the National Security Intelligence (NSI), a mobile court conducted a raid in the Boropukur Par area of Bailor Union in Trishal on Sunday. During the operation, three establishments, including Messers Sujan Traders, were fined a total of 55,000 taka.

Between the lines: Rina Akter, the owner of Messers Sujan Traders, was producing fish feed using tannery waste without authorization. According to fisheries officials, if this feed enters the human body through fish, it poses a risk of various complex and fatal diseases, including cancer.

What’s next: The mobile court has ordered the accused establishment to remain closed for the time being, and samples of the seized ingredients have been sent to a laboratory. A final decision regarding the future operations of the establishment will be made based on the lab report and the explanation provided by the owner.

The bottom line: Messers Latif Traders and Bongo Trading Corporation were also fined for operating businesses without licenses in violation of the law. This strict stance by the administration has instilled fear among adulterated food producers, and there have been demands to continue regular monitoring to ensure public safety.

Background: The operation was led by Trishal Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Mojahidul Islam. The Upazila Livestock Officer and the Senior Fisheries Officer were present during the drive to provide technical assistance. Action has been taken against the accused under Section 20 of the Fish and Animal Feed Act, 2010. Local conscious citizens believe that, considering public health, it is necessary to take strict legal action against such dishonest businessmen rather than just imposing fines. An investigation is ongoing to trace the source of the raw materials and ingredients used by the fish feed production facility.

Corruption and information suppression allegations against Rajshahi District Livestock Officer

HEADLINE: Corruption and information suppression allegations against Rajshahi District Livestock Officer

Rajshahi District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Atowar Rahman is facing serious allegations of violating the Right to Information Act, misappropriating project funds, and engaging in widespread bribery.

This incident has raised significant questions regarding the transparency and accountability of public services.
