Why it matters: The government has taken a historic decision to increase salaries, allowances, and various benefits to enhance the financial and professional status of village police members engaged in maintaining law and order and providing administrative services at the grassroots level.

The big picture: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced at a grand rally marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day that, from now on, village police members will receive a monthly salary of 10,500 taka, and village police chiefs will receive 11,000 taka. Under the current pay structure, village police members receive 7,500 taka and chiefs receive 8,000 taka, marking a significant increase through this announcement.

Alongside this, each member will be provided with 150 taka per month for mobile bills to facilitate communication.

What’s next: The Ministry of Local Government has been instructed to reduce the cycle replacement period for village police members from five years to three to three and a half years.
