Bangladeshi Passenger Held at Benapole with Large Sum of Foreign Currency

Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB) has detained a Bangladeshi passenger at the Benapole check post for carrying a large amount of foreign currency. The man, identified as Shafikul Islam, 46, was held on Friday morning after BGB personnel recovered 110,000 Saudi Riyals and 10,000 US dollars from his luggage. The seized currency is valued at approximately Tk 4.82 million.

According to officials, Shafikul Islam, son of Sirajul Islam from Harnath Ghosh Road in Dhaka’s Lalbagh area, arrived from India through the Benapole land port. During baggage scanning, the foreign currency — hidden using special techniques — was discovered. His passport number is E-00745663.

BGB sources said Shafikul had travelled to India a day earlier for business purposes. While staying at a hotel in Kolkata, he was handed the foreign currency by another Bangladeshi man named Litu, who instructed him to deliver it to an unidentified person upon returning to Bangladesh.

Lt Col Saifullah Siddiqui, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-49 in Jashore, confirmed the arrest, stating that the operation was carried out based on confidential information. The seized money has been deposited with the Benapole Customs seizure wing, and the detainee has been handed over to Benapole Port Police for further legal action.

Historic Verdict Today: Global Audience Awaits Trial of Sheikh Hasina

The verdict in the war crimes case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two others—linked to the July uprising—will be delivered today, Monday. The ruling is scheduled for after 11am by a three-member panel of Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Golam Mortuja Mojumdar. The judgment will be broadcast live nationwide and globally.

Bangladeshi media outlets will air the proceedings via state-run BTV, while international agency Reuters will also carry the live feed. Additionally, the Ministry of Culture has arranged large-screen public viewings across several locations in Dhaka. BTV’s special crew arrived at the tribunal after 8am, with local and foreign journalists waiting outside the main gate.

Security has been tightened around the tribunal and Supreme Court areas, with police, RAB, APBn, BGB, army personnel and intelligence units deployed. Authorities restricted traffic from Doel Chattar to Shikkhabhaban from Sunday evening and limited public movement for security reasons.

The tribunal set the date for the verdict on 13 November. Over 28 working days, testimonies and cross-examinations of 54 witnesses were completed, followed by nine days of arguments by the prosecution and state defence. On 23 October, Attorney General Asaduzzaman and the prosecution concluded their final submissions before the court granted time to set a verdict date.

The prosecution brought five charges of crimes against humanity against the three accused, including incitement, use of lethal weapons, the killing of Abu Saeed, killings in Chankharpul, and the burning of bodies in Ashulia. The case comprises an extensive 8,747-page formal charge, including evidence documents, seizure lists and a detailed list of martyrs. Eighty-four witnesses were included. One accused, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, testified as an approver, leaving his fate to the tribunal, though his lawyer requested acquittal. The prosecution has sought maximum punishment for Sheikh Hasina and Kamal.
