People Fed Up with Behavior of 24th Movement Activists- Kader Siddique

Abdul Kader Siddique, Bir Uttam and founder of Krishak Sramik Janata League, has said that the people of Bangladesh are fed up with the current behavior of the 24th movement activists. He made the remarks at a press conference at his residence in Tangail on Thursday (28 August).

While expressing his support for the movement, Siddique said he considered it close to the country’s independence struggle. However, he noted that the activists’ recent actions are causing public suffering. He added that although he expected their victory to last long, it is now fading quickly, labeling the current regime’s allies as “greater autocrats” than before.

Siddique also said that Bangladesh would not have been independent without Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and that Tangail’s political foundation would not have existed without Latif Siddique. He stressed the need for fair elections and stronger security in the country.

Commenting on the Latif Siddique incident, Siddique claimed that during an event organized by the ’71 Mancha, a mob handed Latif Siddique over to law enforcement. He urged that Latif Siddique be released with dignity, adding that any legal charges against him should be settled in court.

Journalists from local print and electronic media attended the press conference.

A BNP leader was seriously injured in a machete attack allegedly carried out by Jubo League leader Nazrul Islam Shamim and his associates in Fulgazi’s Amjadhat union of Feni on Wednesday morning (27 August).

The victim, Abul Kalam (55), a member of Fulgazi Upazila BNP and former general secretary of the union’s Chhatra Dal, is now receiving treatment at the upazila health complex.

According to locals, during a meeting on a motorcycle theft incident, a suspect mentioned the name of a relative of Shamim, prompting the Jubo League leader to assault him. When Kalam intervened, he was struck on the head with a sharp weapon.

The incident sparked tension in the area, with BNP leaders and residents condemning the attack and demanding immediate arrests.

Police said the identified thief, Delwar Hossain (33), has been arrested and sent to court. The officer-in-charge of Fulgazi Police Station, Lutfor Rahman, stated that legal action would be taken if formal complaints about the assault are filed.

BNP Rules Out Alliance with Jamaat: Salahuddin Ahmed

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has ruled out any possibility of an electoral alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. He made the remarks on Tuesday (August 26) while speaking to journalists at his residence in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Salahuddin said that BNP is holding talks with several Islamist parties but insisted that no alliance with Jamaat is under consideration. He confirmed that the next general election will take place in early February 2026, adding that neither the Election Commission, the government, nor BNP has any concerns about it.

Regarding the July Charter, he noted that only proposals immune from legal challenges will be accepted, and such decisions will be implemented through parliament. He further stated that any party boycotting the polls would “eliminate themselves.”

On candidate selection, Salahuddin emphasized that those who played a role in the anti-fascist movement will be prioritized, while individuals committed to merit-based politics will represent the party.
