Harut and Marut: Quranic Truth Behind the Mystery of Babylon
For centuries, the names Harut and Marut have remained among the most mysterious in Islamic history—wrapped in layers of myths, legends, and folklore that often obscure the truth. Yet, when viewed through the lens of the Qur’an and Hadith, a clearer, divine narrative emerges—one that separates revelation from imagination.
The story originates in Babylon (ancient Babel), once a flourishing city on the banks of the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq).
According to the Qur’an (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 102), “They followed what the devils recited during the reign of Solomon. Solomon did not disbelieve; rather, the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and what was revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut, in Babylon.”
The verse further clarifies that the two angels warned every learner: “We are only a test, so do not disbelieve.”
Despite the warning, people misused the knowledge—learning spells that caused division between husband and wife. However, the Qur’an stresses that no harm occurred except by Allah’s permission.
Renowned exegete Ibn Kathir (RA) wrote that Prophet Solomon (AS) was falsely accused of practicing sorcery—a charge proven false. Instead, it was the devils who spread forbidden magic and forged writings later misused as “Solomonic charms.”
Classical scholars such as Imam Tabari and Ibn Jarir interpret the term “Harut and Marut” in two possible readings—either as angels (malakayni) or as two kings (malikayni). If angels, they symbolize a divine test for humankind, not punishment.
The Qur’an confirms, “They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, but do what they are ordered.” (Surah At-Tahrim, verse 6)
Thus, the widely circulated tales involving a woman named Zuhra are unfounded myths with no basis in authentic Islamic sources.
Scholars conclude that the narrative of Harut and Marut serves as a moral and theological lesson: knowledge is a divine trust, and its misuse leads to corruption.
Ultimately, the story reminds believers that Allah alone is the source of all power, and every form of knowledge—spiritual or worldly—is a test of faith.
