Khaleda Zia Speaks After Three Unresponsive Days; Condition Still Critical
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been critically ill, spoke briefly on Saturday after being largely unresponsive for the past three days. She is currently undergoing treatment at the CCU of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, according to doctors and family sources.
Hospital sources said she exchanged a few words in the morning with Shamila Rahman, wife of her late son Arafat Rahman Koko. Her condition showed slight improvement compared to the previous days, though physicians warn that the overall situation remains critical.
Khaleda Zia’s kidney function has severely deteriorated, leading to excessive fluid accumulation in her body—particularly in the lungs—causing acute breathing difficulties. She has been on dialysis for four consecutive days, but the fluid could not be reduced sufficiently, leaving her almost unresponsive.
Doctors consider the coming days to be extremely crucial. They say no substantial recovery is possible unless her kidney function stabilizes.
A combined medical board—including Bangladeshi specialists and experts from Johns Hopkins Hospital and the London Clinic—has reached a policy decision to send her abroad for advanced treatment. The final decision, however, depends on whether she is medically fit to endure air travel. London Clinic remains the first choice, while Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital is the alternative option.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, however, stated that her present condition does not allow her to be taken abroad at this moment.
