Ramadan 2026 likely to begin on February 19, Eid-ul-Fitr on March 20- say astronomers

With less than two months left before the new year, astronomers have announced the probable dates for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr in 2026.

According to Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, president of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Ramadan in the year 1447 Hijri is expected to begin on Thursday, February 19, while Eid-ul-Fitr will likely fall on Friday, March 20. He shared the forecast with Al Arabiya on October 16.

Al-Jarwan explained that the Ramadan crescent will appear on February 17, but it will set just one minute after sunset, making it impossible to spot with the naked eye. Therefore, Ramadan will officially begin on February 19.

During the first few days of the holy month, fasting hours in most Middle Eastern countries will be around 12 hours, gradually increasing to 13 hours by the end of Ramadan.

Saudi Arabia’s moon-sighting committee is scheduled to meet on February 18, though critics say the kingdom often follows its own Umm al-Qura calendar for religious announcements.

Since Bangladesh typically observes Ramadan and Eid one day after the Middle East, the first day of fasting in Bangladesh is expected on February 20, and Eid-ul-Fitr on March 21, 2026.
