Stranded by Poverty: Public Help Brings Home Body of Mosque Caretaker
After battling blood cancer for nine months, Md. Ali Akbar Moyazzem, a 65-year-old mosque caretaker from Ramapur Union, Companiganj, Noakhali, passed away on Thursday (6 November) evening at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital in Dhaka.
His body remained at the hospital as his son, Hafiz Mohammad Saiful Islam, could not afford the Tk 19,500 needed to pay the medical bills and ambulance fare. “I am already deep in debt from my father’s treatment,” Saiful said in tears.
Mufti Zakaria Rahman, the khateeb of Baitul Aman Jame Mosque, confirmed the incident, describing Ali Akbar as a devoted caretaker who served the mosque until his final days. “It’s heartbreaking that his body had to wait because of a lack of money,” he said.
The story came to light after journalist and Noakhali Youth Forum president Hamid Rony posted about it on social media, sparking a wave of compassion and donations.
Soon after, Md. Zahirul Islam, founder of the Dr. Mostafa Hajera Foundation, took responsibility for all the expenses, while another philanthropist, Mohammad Ansari, sent an equal amount to the deceased’s family. Many others from home and abroad contributed as well.
Saiful later managed to bring his father’s body home and expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who came forward, saying, “Humanity still lives among us.”
