New Deadlock in Politics over PR System

Bangladesh’s upcoming 13th parliamentary election faces deep political divisions over whether it should be held under the traditional system or through proportional representation (PR). While the BNP strongly opposes PR, at least 18 parties including Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh support it. Of 50 registered parties, 28 oppose PR and 4 remain neutral.
The National Consensus Commission has circulated the final draft of the “July Charter 2025,” outlining 84 agreed points but lacking a clear implementation roadmap. Most parties favor a bicameral legislature, though BNP and NDM remain opposed.
A survey by civic group SUJAN found 71% of respondents support PR in the upper house. BNP, however, dismissed the idea as unrealistic and conspiratorial, while Jamaat warned that elections without PR would fuel fascism.
Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has confirmed the election will be held by February, with the Election Commission set to release its roadmap soon. Analysts caution that unless the PR deadlock is resolved quickly, the electoral timeline could face uncertainty.

People Fed Up with Behavior of 24th Movement Activists- Kader Siddique

Abdul Kader Siddique, Bir Uttam and founder of Krishak Sramik Janata League, has said that the people of Bangladesh are fed up with the current behavior of the 24th movement activists. He made the remarks at a press conference at his residence in Tangail on Thursday (28 August).
While expressing his support for the movement, Siddique said he considered it close to the country’s independence struggle. However, he noted that the activists’ recent actions are causing public suffering. He added that although he expected their victory to last long, it is now fading quickly, labeling the current regime’s allies as “greater autocrats” than before.
Siddique also said that Bangladesh would not have been independent without Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and that Tangail’s political foundation would not have existed without Latif Siddique. He stressed the need for fair elections and stronger security in the country.
Commenting on the Latif Siddique incident, Siddique claimed that during an event organized by the ’71 Mancha, a mob handed Latif Siddique over to law enforcement. He urged that Latif Siddique be released with dignity, adding that any legal charges against him should be settled in court.
Journalists from local print and electronic media attended the press conference.
